Movie memory: The Champ (1979), starring Jon Voight and Ricky Schroder
I was about ten years old, when I saw this movie. It was another 20 years before I could watch it, again.
Why so long between viewings? Because (spoiler alert) I cried so hard and so long, at the end, that I couldn’t move for 30 minutes after the movie was over. I could not. stop. crying.
Of course, I fan-girled on Rick Schroder for several years, afterwards, but I could not bring myself to watch The Champ, again, until I knew I wasn’t going to ball my eyes out.
I did tear up, that last time, but I held it together a whole lot better.
But, I try to avoid tear-jerker movies, now, because I don’t want to turn into a sopping mess when it’s over.
